Race Across America (RAAM)
supporting the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at RVH
|Over $11,100 already raised towards Race Across America for Radiation! |
In November 2014 Jackie was diagnosed with a rare form of rectal cancer. So began the journey of imaging, colonoscopies, biopsies, and emergent surgery for an ostomy due to a near bowel obstruction. This was immediately followed by 7 weeks of chemo and radiation. Its amazing to know that a few short years ago daily trips to Toronto would have been required in order to receive the recommended treatment. Jackie is one of the lucky ones, having had an excellent response to the treatment and care she received at Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre(RVH).
There are still some Cancer diagnosis that are not treatable within RVH’s Cancer Centre. Because most patients feel so unwell during their cancer treatment, the added stress of this travel can influence patients to make choices about their treatment that reduce the quality of their outcomes. Mark and Jackie Herbst are raising funds for the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre in the hopes that eventually every patient can be treated 100% within their home community. We hope this will help more cancer patients maximize their treatment outcomes.
From June 14—26, 2016, ultra-endurance cyclists will embark on what is known as the world’s toughest bike race, the Race Across America. This annual transcontinental bicycle race begins on the west coast, in Oceanside, CA, and finishes over 4,800 km away in Annapolis, MA. Racers endure miles of cycling, over extremes of terrain, with minimal opportunities for sleep or basic comforts. The race has become an outstanding platform for raising money for charitable causes. Mark will be among those racers in an attempt to complete this solo effort within the time allowed to complete this race. At 60 years of age, if successful, Mark will be one of a very few individuals to complete this quest. He is already well into his training to race this event, and will be supported by a crew of 9 , including Jackie, as he makes his way across the country.
